Sauna Kit FAQs
Can I install this sauna kit myself?
Yes! Most homeowners with basic carpentry skills successfully install Homecraft sauna kits themselves in a weekend using tools like a skill saw, drill, level, and brad nailer. Our tongue-and-groove cedar panels install like wood flooring, benches come pre-assembled with routed components, and we provide detailed instructions and support. However, you’ll need a licensed electrician to wire the 240v heater to code.
Do I need to insulate the walls behind the sauna?
Yes. Your pre-framed space must have R-13 fiberglass batt insulation in walls (R-19 recommended for ceilings) before installing the kit. This kit includes aluminum foil vapour barrier to seal walls and ceiling. Install it over insulation on the warm side, then add horizontal strapping to create an air gap before cedar installation. Never use plastic vapor barriers – only aluminum foil rated for high heat.
Does the sauna kit come with a heater?
Yes. Every Homecraft DIY sauna kit includes a CSA-approved electric heater sized appropriately for the room volume. The heater size varies by kit (4kW-9kW depending on sauna dimensions), and all electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician. If you need a different heater size or model upgrade, contact us for custom options.
Can this sauna kit be installed outdoors?
Yes. Homecraft kits work equally well indoors or outdoors when installed in a properly framed, insulated, and weathertight structure (shed, garage, dedicated building). For outdoor installations, especially in cold climates, ensure R-13+ wall insulation (R-19 for ceilings), aluminum foil vapour barrier, and a weatherproof roof and foundation. You may want to size up the heater by 1-2kW for extreme climates.
What kind of floor should I build it on?
Install your sauna kit on concrete, tile, sealed cement, or a cedar platform. All these options are suitable and heat-resistant. Never install on carpet, vinyl, or laminate flooring. The floor should be level, structurally sound (sauna with heater and stones weighs 200-300+ lbs), and able to handle occasional water from bucket/ladle use.
