Sauna Aluminum Vapour Foil
High-temperature vapour barrier that insulates and protects your sauna from moisture damage.
This isn’t just a vapour barrier – it’s a radiant heat reflector that bounces warmth back into your sauna room, improving efficiency and protecting your insulation. It is also an extra insulator as it reflects heat back into the sauna room. At 48″ wide with 275 square feet of coverage, this roll provides enough material for a 7′ x 7′ sauna room with reliable, heat-resistant protection.
- High-Temperature Rated: Won’t melt or break down like standard polyethylene vapour barriers
- Radiant Heat Reflector: Bounces heat back into the sauna for improved efficiency
- Complete Coverage: 48″ wide roll covers 275 sq ft (enough for a 7′ x 7′ sauna)
- Easy Installation: Mark studs through the foil with a grease pencil for a simple T&G cedar lining

Why aluminum foil instead of a plastic vapour barrier?
Aluminum foil vapour barriers are designed for high-heat environments like saunas and won’t melt, emit fumes, or break down like plastic (polyethylene) barriers. The aluminum also reflects radiant heat back into the sauna, improving efficiency by up to 10-15%. This dual function–vapour barrier plus heat reflector–makes aluminum foil the superior choice for sauna construction. Never use plastic vapour barriers in saunas.
How do I install aluminum vapour foil?
Install the vapour foil over your insulation on the warm side (inside) of the wall studs before adding cedar. Overlap seams by 2-3 inches and seal with aluminum foil tape (not regular duct tape). The shiny side should face the sauna interior to reflect heat. You can mark stud locations through the foil with a grease pencil before installing tongue-and-groove cedar. See our Resources section for detailed installation videos.
How much foil do I need for my sauna?
This 48″ wide roll covers 275 sq ft, which is enough for a 7′ × 7′ sauna with standard ceiling height when accounting for walls and ceiling. Calculate your needs: (wall perimeter × ceiling height) + (floor area for ceiling) = total sq ft needed. Add 10% for overlap and waste. For larger saunas, you may need multiple rolls.
