Sauna Stones FAQs

How often should I replace sauna stones?

Replacing your sauna stones is important when they show visible cracks, crumbling, or produce noticeably less steam. Stones naturally break down from repeated heating and cooling cycles–cracked stones reduce heat retention and steam quality. Check your stones every year and rearrange them to ensure even wear. Homecraft includes appropriate igneous sauna stones with all heaters and kits. Replace your sauna stones every 1-2 years.

Can I use regular rocks or river stones in my sauna?

No–never use regular rocks, river stones, sandstone, or limestone in your sauna heater, as they can explode when heated due to trapped moisture or structural weaknesses. Only use igneous volcanic rocks specifically sold for sauna use–these are heat-treated and designed to withstand extreme temperature cycles safely. Using improper stones is a serious safety hazard and can damage your heater.

How many sauna stones do I need?

Stone quantity depends on your heater model. Compact heaters (4-6kW) typically hold 50-80 lbs, while larger models like Homecraft’s Revive series hold 100-200 lbs for extended steam duration. More stones mean longer heat retention and softer, more sustained steam (löyly). Arrange stones loosely to allow airflow through the heater and never pack them tightly. Check your heater’s manual for the exact quantity needed.
